Ladders : Selection and Maintenance



A ladder is a type of climbing equipment used to reach the highest point of any structure. A ladder consists of two long lengths of metal, wood, or rope linked by steps. Hazards and duties must be considered while choosing a ladder. Ladders must also be maintained to work effectively. Each type of ladder has its own set of inspection and maintenance requirements. Selection of Ladders depends on the following factors :

1. Length:

-Stepladder users must be able to reach around four feet from the ladder’s top when standing on the second step from the top.

– Extending ladders must be 7-10 feet longer than the vertical distance to the structure’s highest contact point.

2. Materials :

– Wood ladders are made of straight grain materials and are free of flaws. Side rails must be completely smooth and sliver-free. When left untreated, wood ladders provide insulation against heat and cold, but they age fast.

– Metal ladders must have a strong cross-section to avoid severe deflection when in operation. To prevent slippage, rungs are corrugated, covered with skid-resistant materials, or otherwise treated.

4. Inspection for Ladders :

  •   Maintenance of Ladders :

-Ensure that all rungs are level, parallel, and evenly spaced.

-Remove any broken ladders from the service and label them “Do Not Use.”

– If ladders are no longer in use, make sure they are destroyed to prevent them from being used again.

– It is advisable to use ladders for the purpose they were designed for.

-Apply a clear preservative to wooden ladders regularly, such as varnish, shellac, or linseed oil.

-Paint should not be used to cover up structural flaws in wooden ladders.

-When the surface of the lowest step on a wooden ladder becomes worn, replace it.

-Clean metal ladder rungs to avoid the buildup of materials that might compromise the nonslip qualities.

-Make a thorough inspection of all metal fittings.

-Protect ladders from the elements by storing them under a proper cover.

-To avoid sagging, support horizontally stored ladders at both ends and intermediate locations.

  • Basic Rules for Ladder Safety :

Rule 1: Choose the appropriate ladder for the work.

Type I Industrial: Heavy duty with a load capacity of no more than 250 pounds.

 Make sure the ladder is long enough to work from without the top three feet being used. Aluminum ladders are not recommended for tasks that may entail contact with electrical current sources.

Rule 3: Carefully assemble the ladder.

It makes no difference how safe a ladder is if it is put in a hazardous area. Any neighboring door that opens toward you should be locked or blocked. The space around the base of the ladder should be clear of debris, and the ladder should be placed on a firm, level surface. Step Ladders should be opened completely. A four-to-one ratio should be used for straight ladders. For every four feet of height to the point of support, the base should be one foot away from the wall or other vertical surface. If you plan to use a ladder to get onto a roof or platform, the ladder must reach at least three feet above the edge and be tied off at the top.

Rule 4: Carefully climb and descend ladders:

To climb and descend, keep your back to the ladder and use both hands. Always keep three limbs on the ladder. Carry tools in a tool belt or use a hand line to lift and lower them.
